Under the Arctic: Digging into Permafrost
September 21, 2019 @ 10:00 am - January 12, 2020 @ 5:00 pm
Journey through a 2,000-square-foot immersive and interactive exhibition that explores the incredible sights and smells of the Arctic with hands-on experiments, interactive models, fossil research stations, and a 30-foot walk-through replica of the nation’s only permafrost research tunnel!
Under the Arctic lets visitors step into the boots of climate science researchers to explore real Ice Age fossils, ancient ice cores, and engineering challenges posed by thawing permafrost. Designed for families, life-long learners and school groups, the exhibition’s distinctive research stations introduce students to diverse Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) careers. It strives to educate visitors about permafrost’s fascinating characteristics, as well as the causes and consequences of a changing climate.
This special exhibition was organized by the Oregon Museum of Science & Industry (OMSI) in partnership with the University of Alaska’s Geophysical Institute and a Native Alaskan advisory team.
