"My friend, I have just returned from Nazareth, where I have been and heard things which no tongue can tell, no pen can paint, no language can describe of which no man can have a just conception until he has heard, seen and felt."  This is one observer's account of a camp meeting at Nazareth Church in July 1802. It is said that 8,000 of the 12,000 population of the county attended.

The local Baptist Association reported gaining more than 2,000 new members in 1801, 1802 and 1803. Nazareth Church was established by the "Tyger River Colony" of Scots-Irish immigrants the first Europeans to settle in west of the Broad River after the Cherokee War in 1760. Many of the graves in the cemetery (listed on the National Register of Historic Places) date from that time. Portions of the present building date from 1832, and visitors will see a nice collection of congregational memorabilia.
