The trail and falls are named for the large, house-sized boulder called Hospital Rock, where legend says Confederate deserters hid out during the Civil War. Jones Gap State Park requires reservations 48 hours in advance and requires a SC State Park pass or parking fee for entry.
Directions:
1. From the Post Office in Cleveland where US 276 and SC 11 meet, take 276 for 1.1 miles, then turn right at the F-Mart onto River Falls Road.
2. Follow this road for 5.4 miles to Jones Gap State Park and park in the lot on the right.
3. Follow the main trail to the visitor’s center and then continue on the paved path that loops around the trout hatchery pond. Look for the signs directing you to campsites 1 through 4.
4. Follow that path and you'll see a sign for Hospital Rock Trail. Take a left once you pass the marker for Campsite 4.
5. After about a mile of moderate, rocky uphill climbing, you arrive at Hospital Rock Falls, which you can see most of to your left and the tallest portion in the distance off the trail.
6. Continue on the trail to your right another 0.5 miles or so, and you'll reach Hospital Rock. The entire trail is 4.4 miles but is washed out and closed past the rock.
