At Wellborn Winery, we produce wines that reflect the history and nature of our upstate South Carolina climate and soil, what the French call "terroir". Before going "pro", we brought in fine grapes and juices from California and Chile to produce some excellent "varietals" (single grape wines). In 2014 we won a double gold at the Florida State Fair for a Merlot we made from grapes from the Sonoma Valley. We'll never be able to replicate that with our upstate climate and soil. We wanted to go from "Vine to Wine" so we decided to see what varieties would thrive here in the upstate. With our small vineyard, we decided that "blends" from our different grapes would be something unique among South Carolina wineries. Embracing this philosophy, we are growing French-American hybrids (Seyval Blanc, Traminette, Chardonel, Chambourcin, Leon Millot) that pair well with our native American Concord, Catawba, and Muscadines. Another local grower provides us the uniquely South Carolinian Lenoir grapes, as well as blueberries and blackberries. Farmers in Marietta, Greer, Chesnee, and Gaffney supply us with strawberries and peaches.
