Historic Caboose Gets New Life

Clevedale Historic Inn and Gardens adds a unique accommodation: the MackRail Cabin Car.

This 1947 Southern Rail X654 once resided in Cleveland Park along with the caboose used as Hub City Railroad Museum. But this caboose tells a story of family history.

“Shortly after restoring the Willis Road homestead, a car pulled up with two ladies, one being Elisabeth Cleveland Welch. Elisabeth, a little frail, requested her caretaker to drive her to see the place of her birth. She recounted that on the night of her birth in 1915, the train broke down nearby. Her father, Conrad Pierce Cleveland Sr., a man of great hospitality, walked to the train and invited weary passengers into the house for tea.”

Now you have an opportunity to stay in the MackRail Cabin Car, which is adjacent to the English Knot Garden and Courtyard. It features

  • Steel Bay Window Caboose
  • Luxury Queen Bedroom and Bath Suite
  • Luxury Egyptian Cotton Sheets and Towels
  • Authentic Railroad Tracks
  • Sitting and Dining Areas
  • Bunks for Family Travel
  • Southern Railroad Paraphernalia
  • Porch and Private Garden
